The Complete Catalogue of British Tanks: All British-built tanks from 1915 to the present day

The Complete Catalogue of British Tanks: All British-built tanks from 1915 to the present day

As the nation that conceived the first tank more than a hundred years ago, Britain has a long and fascinating series of tank designs to its credit. Despite a period of apathy from the relevant authorities about the value of tanks, which led to its grateful reliance on American-made models during the Second World War, Britain bounced back to become an important innovator once again – notably with the development of the still-secret Chobham armour for the 1980s. In addition to the outstanding successes of British tank design, there were many unsuccessful designs along the way. The sheer quantity of proposals, prototypes and production models is bewildering to all but the non-specialist, and yet fascinating to those who persevere in their search for information. The Complete Catalogue of British Tanks therefore aims to make the essential information available in readily digestible form, as well as to suggest further sources of information for those who wish to take their interest a stage further. Completed with useful Appendices about the variety of engines used in British tanks, and about the multiple main weapons that have been employed, this book will be a rapid-reference standby for anyone with an interest in the story of these armoured fighting vehicles.

A-Z British Coachbuilders: 1919-1960

A-Z British Coachbuilders: 1919-1960

Coachbuilding on motor car chassis evolved from carriage building, and the development of the coachbuilt body closely followed that of the motor car. From the beginning of the 20th century until the arrival in the late 1930s of unitary construction for motor cars, in which the separate chassis and body gave way to a combined body/chassis structure, coachbuilding flourished in Britain, with hundreds of firms exhibiting their latest designs at motor shows year after year. But by the outbreak of World War 2, the industry was already in terminal decline. Many coachbuilders, like Barker or Hooper built one-off bodies for the `carriage trade’, the noble and wealthy who sought the distinction of choosing a style of body and interior to suit their personal tastes and requirements, and such bodies were naturally to be found on the most expensive makes of motor car, like the Rolls-Royce, Bentley and exotic marques from the Continent. Other coachbuilders aimed to produce inexpensive bodies in series for volume manufacturers who wanted, for example, to be able to offer a convertible version of a certain model but did not wish to have to make the bodies themselves. Yet others established a special relationship with a single manufacturer, like Charlesworth with Alvis, in order to procure a steady flow of work. This book is a comprehensive study of coachbuilding, and coachbuilders, in Britain. The author sets the scene by describing advances in fashions and techniques of coachbuilding in separate chapters on the 1920s, 1930s and the postwar period. He then gives a unique A-Z coverage of more than 300 British coachbuilders. In addition, there is a chapter offering useful advice on assessing the condition, and likely repair needs, of a coachbuilt body today. A glossary of coachbuilding terms and what they mean completes the picture. More than 400 photographs, 50 of them in color, have been painstakingly hunted down to illustrate coachbuilding fashions and methods as well as the work of the coachbuilders described in the A-Z section. This new enlarged and revised edition features brand new entries

Niki Lauda: His competition history

Niki Lauda: His competition history

This is the story of Niki Luada’s racing career.

  • Climbing the ladder: starting against his family’s wishes with a Mini in 1968, Niki Lauda drove a Formula Vee Kaimann in 1969 and had a disastrous Formula 3 season with McNamara in 1970 before switching to a Porsche sports car; with progress stalling, he took out a loan to buy a Formula 2 seat at March in 1971.
  • Faltering in Formula 1: he debuted with March at the 1971 Austrian Grand Prix, then stayed with the team in 1972; he moved to BRM for 1973, still paying his way with further borrowing
  • and some income from racing touring cars — but in all this time he had only one points-scoring Formula 1 finish.
  • The Ferrari years: finally Lauda fulfilled his promise after receiving the call to Maranello, winning the World Championship twice in his four years there, in 1975 and 1977, but he left after tensions with the team arose in his final season.
  • The Brabham years: Lauda famously won the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix in Brabham’s ‘fan car.’ but thereafter the team’s competitiveness declined and he retired at the end of 1979, tired of driving round in circles’ and focused instead on his new airline, Lauda Air.
  • The McLaren years: tempted by a salary of unprecedented size, Lauda returned in 1982 after a two-year absence, silenced doubters by winning his third race, and in 1984 secured his third World Championship; at the end of 1985, with a career tally of 25 Grand Prix victories, he hung up his helmet for good.
Modifying the Aerodynamics of Your Road Car

Modifying the Aerodynamics of Your Road Car

Modifying the Aerodynamics of Your Road Car is a unique handbook that assumes no starting knowledge of vehicle aerodynamics. It begins with simple ideas and finishes with sophisticated and effective aerodynamic modifications that work.
Three major chapters cover on-road testing techniques that give you all the information you need to decide what modifications you should make – and, after you’ve made them, how well they work. Low-cost techniques allow you to visualize the patterns of airflow over your car so that you can actually see the problem areas that need improvement. Uniquely, you’re also shown how to measure aerodynamic pressures, so you can determine which body surfaces are creating lift, drag and downforce. Want to work out where a wing should be placed? On-road testing to find that out is covered as well. The book also shows you how to measure downforce to see if that wing is actually working!
If you wish to reduce drag, more than ten different areas are covered. Reducing frontal area, lowering cooling system drag, optimizing vehicle ride height and rake, reducing the strength of the wake, achieving clean airflow separation and optimizing wheel designs are all covered using the latest research findings. And if you’re a performance driver, there’s a major chapter devoted to reducing lift and improving stability. This chapter includes the design and development of undertrays and diffusers, wings and spoilers. The example car developed measurable downforce when fitted with an undertray and rear diffuser, something that transformed its on-road handling.
The author has been writing about the aerodynamics of road cars for more than 25 years. He is also an experienced and proficient car modifier who has performed numerous aerodynamic modifications and upgrades to his own cars. The book’s technical consultant, RH Barnard, is an acknowledged world leading automotive aerodynamicist.
If you want a practical, hands-on guide that demystifies and explains car aerodynamics, and shows you how to make effective aerodynamic modifications to your car, this book is for you.
Still Life With Tatra Wrecks

Still Life With Tatra Wrecks

Come with me into a world I have neither invented nor exaggerated. To a world that, as I pressed the shutter button of my camera, looked exactly the same as the photos. To a world that wishes to remain secret so as to quietly disappear over time.
Even as I took my first photos of car wrecks in 2006, I told myself I was collecting material for a book. The journey, however, turned out to be much longer, trickier and more interesting than I first thought. Sometimes things worked out, sometimes they didn‘t, and many times I asked myself if there was any point in continuing and if I hadn‘t already exhausted the topic, but I never threw in the towel.
You may ask yourself, as do others, how I go about looking for cars. Where do I find them? How do I know where to look for them? I have been publishing photos of rusty car wrecks for years now. I therefore have many friends among vintage car enthusiasts, and whenever they come across a rusty vehicle, they send me the classic message: „Vladimir, we‘ve got something for you.“ Since the world is not as big as it used to be, and the Internet reaches almost anywhere, people from all over the world write to me. I am, of course, very pleased that I am not the only one that finds meaning in such a challenge. It is a kind of symbiosis – people give me tips, and I try to reach the location, talk to the owner and document whatever I can. If it weren‘t for these enthusiasts, I would most likely not even enjoy the process and this book would never have been created.

GT Love: 50 Years Opel GT

GT Love: 50 Years Opel GT

  • Born in 1968 and manufactured for just five years, the Opel GT is a legend; this book is the standard work on the subject
  • Includes previously unpublished photos, design sketches, and anecdotes
  • GT designer Erhard Schnell, who celebrates his 90th birthday in 2017, has contributed some new sketches of the GT exclusively for this book
  • Celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Opel GT in 2018 – half a century of automobile history\

“When I was a young boy and saw the Opel GT, I knew: When I grow up, I must have this car. My wish came true.” So says Opel manager Karl-Thomas Neumann in his preface. Bob Lutz, the living automobile legend, an 84-year-old combat jet pilot who, as a young marketing director at Opel, played a substantial role in starting the GT series, praises the GT: “The GT has a lot in common with my Alpha Jet. It is not very comfortable, has weak air-conditioning, the boot is almost non existent. But that is irrelevant. One hour in the Jet or GT – and you feel just happy. Almost younger.”

Kapitän, Admiral, Diplomat, Manta, Monza – many Opels have illustrious names and thrilling designs. But there is just one true legend of the brand with the flash: the GT. For generations of drivers the sports coupé is an eye-catcher, milestone, cult, and dream. It is regarded as the most sensational Opel ever – it sets an example for today’s models especially the GT Concept, which premiered at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2016.

Authors Harald Hamprecht and Jens Cooper tell gripping stories about fans of the Opel GT from all over the world, from the USA to Italy to Australia. Both GT drivers, the authors combed the corporation’s archive, searched for contemporary sources, and spent uncountable hours with experts, fans, and those who played a crucial role in the GT’s development to create this – the ultimate guide to a remarkable car.

Lewis Leathers: Lewis Leathers: Wings, Wheels & Rock ’n’ Roll Vol.1

Lewis Leathers: Lewis Leathers: Wings, Wheels & Rock ’n’ Roll Vol.1

Lewis Leathers is Britain’s oldest motorcycle apparel company. Lewis Leathers has specialised in high quality, English-made classic motorcycle jackets since 1892. In the mid ’50’s the British young teenagers were inspired by the American biker look which they picked-up as part of the then new motorcycle culture. They started to wear Lewis Leathers jackets. During the ’70’s Lewis Leathers got attention from the Punk scene. The company has a rich history and is nowadays a true cult classic. Rin Tanaka, publisher of the legendary My Freedamn book series, made the ‘Lewis Leathers – Wings, Wheels and Rock & Roll Vol.1 (1890’s-1960’s)‘ book together with Derek Harris (the driving force behind Lewis Leathers). Rin Tanaka is an expert when it comes to vintage clothing and lifestyle. With the Lewis Leathers book Vol. 1 Rin Tanaka dived into the large Lewis Leathers archive to show some unique pieces and highlights from the history of the company. Just like his previous books you can put this one  high on your wishlist. And it seems that there’s also a Vol. 2 coming.

Antique and Classic Cars: Their Maintenance and Operation

Antique and Classic Cars: Their Maintenance and Operation

The classic book on the maintenance and driving of vintage cars

Antique & Classic Cars: Their Maintenance and Operation is a companion volume to Wheatley and Morgan’s standard work The Restoration of Antique and Classic Cars, in which they took the reader right through a complete overhaul up to the point where his car was ready to start its life all over again. In this book they not only carry the story on from where it was left previously, taking the reader out onto the road with his car, and instructing him how best to maintain it in the impeccable condition it deserves, but they also retrace their steps in places and cover more fully some technical points which could merely be outlined before.

Antique & Classic Cars: Their Maintenance and Operation is equally useful to those who have no wish to restore an antique or classic car but who either possess, or feel that they might like to own, such a car which is already in reasonable condition. For the unintiated driver there is advice on the use of his car in races, rallies and concours. The selection of 42 illustrations from photographs and diagrams has been specially prepared for the book to clarify and supplement the authors’ instructions and advice.

Originally published in the United Kingdom in 1964 under the title The Maintenance and Driving of Vintage Cars, this book has since become a standard in the field of antique and vintage automotive restoration.

There is immense pleasure to be obtained from driving a car with a long stroke engine and a high axle ratio, and in mastering the difficulties of a crash gear box. This handbook points the way to the enjoyments of these delights.

Check Six!:A Thunderbolt Pilot’s War Across the Pacific

Check Six!:A Thunderbolt Pilot’s War Across the Pacific

There were no mission limits for a pilot in the Pacific during World War II; unlike in Europe, you flew until it was time to go home. So it was for James “Jug” Curran, all the way from New Guinea to the Philippines with the 348th Fighter Group, the first P-47 Thunderbolt outfit in the Pacific.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Curran volunteered to try flying in the blue yonder, and trained as an Army fighter pilot. He got his wish to fly the P-47 in the Pacific, going into combat in August 1943, in New Guinea, and later helping start the “Black Rams” fighter squadron. The heavy U.S. Thunderbolts were at first curious to encounter the nimble, battle-hardened Japanese in aerial combat, but soon the American pilots gained skill of their own and their planes proved superior. Bombers on both sides could fall to fighters, but the fighters themselves were eyeball to eyeball, best man win.

Check Six! is an aviation chronicle that brings the reader into flight, then into the fight, throughout the Pacific War and back. This work, from someone who was there, captures the combat experience of our aviators in the Pacific, aided by pertinent excerpts from the official histories of units that “Jug” Curran flew with.

It is a tale of perseverance, as Curran flew over 200 combat missions, and with the men of the 348th Fighter Group proved the Thunderbolt’s great capability as they battled their way against a stubborn and deadly foe. This work increases the body of knowledge on the critical role of aviation in the Pacific War, as U.S. fighter pilots took the lead in our counteroffensive against the short-lived island Empire.

Rocket Ranch: The Nuts and Bolts of the Apollo Moon Program at Kennedy Space Center

Rocket Ranch: The Nuts and Bolts of the Apollo Moon Program at Kennedy Space Center

Jonathan Ward takes the reader deep into the facilities at Kennedy Space Center to describe NASA’s first computer systems used for spacecraft and rocket checkout and explain how tests and launches proceeded. Descriptions of early operations include a harrowing account of the heroic efforts of pad workers during the Apollo 1 fire. A companion to the author’s book Countdown to a Moon Launch: Preparing Apollo for Its Historic Journey, this explores every facet of the facilities that served as the base for the Apollo/Saturn missions. Hundreds of illustrations complement the firsthand accounts of more than 70 Apollo program managers and engineers.

The era of the Apollo/Saturn missions was perhaps the most exciting period in American space exploration history. Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center were buzzing with activity. Thousands of workers came to town to build the facilities and launch the missions needed to put an American on the Moon before the end of the decade.

Work at KSC involved much more than just launching rockets. It was a place like none other on Earth. Technicians performed intricate operations, and hazards abounded everywhere, including lightning, fire, highly-toxic fuels, snakes, heat, explosives, LOX spills, and even plutonium. The reward for months of 7-day workweeks under intense pressure was witnessing a Saturn V at liftoff.

For anyone who ever wished they had worked at Kennedy Space Center during the Apollo era, this book is the next best thing. The only thing missing is the smell of rocket fuel in the morning.

Concours d’Elegance

Concours d’Elegance

“Surely no form of contest has ever equaled the marriage of luxury and ostentation offered for many years by the great concours d’élégance. Elitist perhaps but their sheer magnificence seems just as fascinating in our present world as it did in the first half of the 20th Century. It should be remembered that these events allowed the most celebrated artists and artisans boundless freedom of expression. Everything was put into the melting-pot to achieve one end – the realisation of a dream.

The vital step for organisers of such events was to choose a venue famous for its air of leisurely hedonism, such as Longchamp, Deauville, Cannes, La Baule, Vichy, Nice or Enghien, where costly automobiles, their elegant silhouettes crafted by the great names of contemporary coachwork , could parade. To enhance the atmosphere, these exotic creations were presented by pretty ladies, mostly recruited from fashionable society, dressed in the latest fashion by the leading Parisian couturiers in an attempt to achieve the best possible symbiosis with the machines that they accompanied.

Without wishing to diminish the important role played in the spectacle by these actors, it was of course the aristocratic automobiles that the eager spectators had come to admire.

This book offers a delicious journey back in time to witness the golden age of the concours d’élégance.

Over fifty coachbuilders covered in the book from Antem to Weymann.

The Quest A Man…A Car…and a Dream

The Quest A Man…A Car…and a Dream

THE QUEST chronicles the beginnings of Corvette Racing at the famed Le Mans 24 Hour Endurance Race in France. Corvettes first appeared there in June of 1960.

The film re-caps that historic race and what happened to both the Corvettes and their drivers.

Following the race, all the Corvettes were lost for decades.

Collectors, restorers and enthusiasts came to recognize the historical significance of these cars, and an undercurrent of frantic searching for them was put into motion.

Corvettes at Carlisle co-founder Chip Miller set a personal goal of finding the 1960 class-winning #3 Corvette, acquiring it, and restoring it. Finally, he wanted to return it to Le Mans in 2010, with one of the original drivers, legendary racer John Fitch, to mark the 50th anniversary of the car’s win.

But a chain of heartbreaking events prevented Chip Miller from completing his vision.

THE QUEST reveals a series of sub-stories that all feed into the emotional tale of a son doing what he felt compelled to do in honoring his father’s wish.

Told by many of the people directly involved, THE QUEST uses archival materials to weave a story never told in its entirety…until now.

MotorBinder

MotorBinder

“MotorBinder by Roy Spencer offers an intimate peak at motor racing’s Golden Age. It is an anthology of photos shot at local tracks, mostly in California, but in Indianapolis, Nassau, and other famous venues as well, which concentrates on the personalities and action around the track instead of on it. Legends like Mr. Phil Hill, Carroll Shelby, John von Neumann, Stirling Moss, Roger Penske and Bruce McLaren fill the pages in moments of private conversation, relaxation, and levity beside the track.
Many of the images contained within the book have never been seen before and were found in two tattered three-ring cloth binders in the archives of the former San Francisco Chronicle motorsports editor, the late Gordon Martin (who also shot many of the photos). There are also many great racing shots in this collection..
With 321 pages of text and gallery quality images this is a must for all race fans, whether you were there or wish you could have been..
